The Identity of the Nazarene
Jesus of Nazareth, also known as Jesus the Nazarene, is a central figure in Christianity. His followers believe he is the Son of God, while others consider him a prophet or spiritual teacher. Jesus was part of Jewish culture, and his life and teachings have been the subject of debate for centuries.
History Divided in Two
The figure of Jesus divides history into two: before him and after him. He was such an important figure that his birth became the reference point for world chronology, dividing history into Before Christ (B.C.) and After Christ (A.D.). His influence has been so profound that it has shaped the culture, morality and philosophy of millions of people throughout the centuries.
Prophet or Son of God?
The question of whether Jesus is the Son of God or just another prophet has been a subject of debate for centuries. Christians believe that Jesus is the Son of God, while Muslims consider him an important prophet but not divine. Others see him as a spiritual leader or a moral teacher, without attributing a divine nature to him. However, the story of Jesus unfolds within a Jewish cultural context, and his message was not dangerous simply because he claimed to be a prophet, but because he claimed to be the Son of God. This is what made him so dangerous to the religious leaders of his time. Because the Holy Scriptures state: 'Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one' (Deuteronomy 6:4-7), and to say that Jesus was the Son of God was to say that he was God himself. To the religious leaders of that era, this was a great sin, and that is why they crucified him. Quoting the Scriptures: 'Then the high priest stood up and said to Jesus, "Have you no answer? What is it that these men testify against you?" But Jesus remained silent. And the high priest said to him, "I adjure you by the living God, tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God." Jesus said to him, "You have said so. But I tell you, from now on you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power and coming on the clouds of heaven." Then the high priest tore his robes and said, "He has uttered blasphemy. What further witnesses do we need? You have now heard his blasphemy. What is your judgment?" They answered, "He deserves death"' (Matthew 26:62-66).
Jesus: The Essence of a Supreme God
An invisible God made visible. The Holy Scriptures state: 'No man can see God and live' (Exodus 33:20), yet Isaiah says: 'I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lifted up; and the train of his robe filled the temple. Above him stood seraphim; each had six wings: with two he covered his face, with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. And one called to another and said: "Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory"' (Isaiah 6:1-3).By definition, Jesus was not God [in a limited sense], but he is part of the essence of God, who has been with God and has always existed. That is why Jesus said: 'I and the Father are one' (John 10:30), and he also said: 'Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father' (John 14:9). Therefore, Jesus is the essence of a Supreme God and is the only way to reach God, because Jesus said: 'I am the way, the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father except through me' (John 14:6).
The Way, the Truth and the Life
To deny that Jesus was and is divine is to deny the essence of God. We cannot assert that Jesus was a mere man or prophet; some claim that he is a special creation of God, but that he is not God. However, Jesus takes the attributes of God and ascribes them to himself. King David said: "The Lord said to my Lord: Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool" (Psalm 110:1). And Jesus said: "Do not call anyone on earth your teacher, for you have one Teacher, and I am he" (Matthew 23:8). Deuteronomy 32:39 states: "See now that I, even I, am he, and there is no god beside me. I kill and I make alive; I wound and I heal; and there is none that can deliver out of my hand." Jesus said: "No one takes my life from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again" (John 10:18).
Conclusion
In conclusion, Jesus the Nazarene is a central figure in human history, and his identity has been the subject of debate for centuries. For Christians, Jesus is the Son of God, while for others he is a prophet or spiritual leader. However, the Scriptures and Jesus' teachings suggest that he is more than a mere man or prophet; he is the essence of a Supreme God, the way to come to God, the truth and the life. To deny his divinity is to deny the essence of God himself.
